My Friend Hans

Hoppe Removed as Mises Institute Senior Distinguished Fellow

In response to “Mises Institute: Quo Vadis?,” Property and Freedom Journal (March 25, 2026), Professor Hoppe has been removed as a Distinguished Senior Fellow (~2000–2026) with the Ludwig von Mises Institute…

I will not attempt to summarize Hoppe’s above-referenced post regarding where the Mises Institute is going.  If you have cared about, or still care about, the Institute, then it is worth a read.  I myself had a long association with the Institute until a few years ago.  My relationship with the Institute was of great benefit, but it became time for me to move on.

In any case, my main purpose in writing this is regarding Hans.  As long-time readers know, I am a big fan of Hans; when it comes to aligning on economic issues or political liberty, I have yet to find a point of disagreement with him, and I have learned immensely from his work.

You will find here several posts I have written about Hans, but my favorite might be “I Love Hans Hoppe!” – well, at least for the title.

Hans Hoppe is one of the kindest people with whom I became acquainted at the Institute.  The first time I met him, and him knowing nothing about me, he took time to talk with me and understand something about me.  He is also, of course, the most consistent Rothbardian scholar in the world.

He is and always has been a gentleman in all of my interactions with him, and I value all of the time we have had together.  It is unfortunate to see this development in his relationship with the Institute, however I know whatever happens, Hans will be respected and admired by all those who value, liberty, peace, and free markets.  Hans needs no titles for this to remain true.

  2. So sorry to hear about MI treatment of Dr. Hoppe. I met him at Murray's New York apartment many moons ago. My older son was a member of the Hoppe Caucus in one of the student libertarian organizations.

  3. I found out today that Walter Block's 46-year-old daughter died of a heart attack on April 1. My thought was that the Mises Institute would acknowledge the tragedy of this for one of its former long-time contributors, regardless of his current status as persona non grata.

  4. Wow, this is all news to me. Certainly there were signs that I looked past, the more and more frequent excommunications. But I guess this is all not surprising in that all human institutions can, and usually do, degrade. Thanks for bringing the Hoppe memo to our attention.

  5. Now, I have to know more about your relationship with the Mises Institute. Up until now I have thought of myself as a Mises Institute libertarian. That isn't so clear now. Not sure what is going on. They refused, for the first time, to publish one of my articles. I've only tried a couple of times. But I wrote on how Austrian economics teaches against mass immigration. I had to self publish after I could get no response from the Libertarian Institute. I'm trying one more place, but I put it on my blog.

I thought the MI was more of a right wing libertarian group. They kicked out Block for his terrible stance on Israel. I thought they were taking a good stance. But now not so clear.

  6. I had just written out a check to the Mises Institute (not yet mailed) when I read this article. I voided the check and instead contributed to the Campaign for Liberty. Peg

  7. I should like to retrieve my ill-considered attempt to defend Walter Block on this website for his stance on the position he has taken over the Israeli's government's actions to depopulate Gaza and other areas of their non-Jewish citizens. I had thought Block would reconsider the editorial written for the Wall Street Journal shortly after the October 2023 attack for which so many innocent civilians have paid with their lives. Instead, he has doubled down to the point I question not only his rationality, but his claim to be a libertarian, or even a classical liberal. Peg
