Well, let me start with a big “if”: if what we are reading about this MOU to end the war in Iran is accurate, or even approximate, it represents a total capitulation by Trump and the United States government. Of course, there was no choice but to capitulate, because it would have taken total annihilation of Iran to avoid this – and total annihilation of Iran would have meant half the world’s population dies.
Another big “if”: if the agreement can hold…. Because too many powerful forces with the means to ensure it doesn’t hold don’t want it to hold. Obviously, I am not talking about Iran – as, assuming the terms we read are somewhat accurate, they come out a big winner. There are players in this game who aren’t bothered at all with the prospect of half the world dying.
With those caveats and concerns in place, two thoughts:
First: poor JD Vance. He is the one being sent out to sell the deal. Not Trump, not Rubio, not Hegseth. Why is that? Trump is too embarrassed, and neither Rubio nor Hegseth ever had any hope at all of capturing the working-class base of what was MAGA in any future election. So, making them take the fall is meaningless because the working-class base of MAGA would never support them in the future anyway.
Vance did have some hope of doing that – carrying that part of the base. If you want to ensure Vance destroys any possibility that he can carry that ball in a couple of years, get him to go out and defend the war and then defend how the deal is good for America.
It is his Kamala Harris moment: “I can’t think of a single policy of Joe Biden / Donald Trump where I would do something differently.” Oh…not even the strategically stupidest decision in US history to launch this war against Iran?
Second: I have commented on this before, but I think it is far more evident now. Many who voted for Trump – again, call it his working-class base – wanted the US out of foreign wars, bring the troops home, shut down the foreign military bases, get out of these international institutions like the UN, the EU, NATO, etc.
Trump is doing that. I certainly don’t like the way he is doing it, but what if he is doing it the only way it can be done in Washington: give the neocons and all associated with wanting more war everything they want?
Could he get US troops out of the Gulf otherwise – if the bases hadn’t been destroyed by Iran? Could he have ensured that the other power centers in the world gained strength at the cost of reducing the position of the US without this war?
Probably not.
So, who knows if this was by Trump’s design. But it certainly looks like it will be one effect. With that said, I still don’t see this empire dying without a fight. It remains very dark before the dawn…if we survive until dawn.
Not to say that Trump and this administration hasn’t failed elsewhere. They have failed at almost everything promised, and many of the things they are succeeding at really stink for some sort of movement toward sanity.
I don't think Trump is intended to do anything good. I think this verse applies.
ReplyDelete"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive."
Very good reference. I wish I thought of it in my post!
DeleteSadly, I still think this doesn't end until Israel is abandoned and / or attacked existentially by the US.
Abandoned. There are many verses condemning the nations that attack. Best bet is to sit on the side and help those in your own family.
DeleteYour comment was prophetic. Israel and their sycophants are already acting as the monkey wrench.
DeleteEasiest prophecy ever made by anyone anywhere!
Delete“Trump” at this point is in scare quotes. To assign him anything more than the same role as “Joe Biden” or “Obama” is to accept a premise that lacks any evidence. Anything downstream of that premise is thus descending into assumptions that go exponential. The 3D chess, trust the plan, white hat, krakken quantum dots of maga1.0 have given way to an even more insidious warren of rabbit holes in search of the white rabbit. We are thirsty for meaning, intent, order. So we find it where it is not. Or read the vector correctly but ignore the direction.
ReplyDeleteThe splintering of maga2.0 could not have been planned much better as a means to corral normal American opposition to clown world back into the paddock of uniparty theatrics. Something is moving forward that has many elements that suggest Our Side is doing things but in aggregate it is the same Progress we have been getting good and hard for decades.
When “Trump” tells me that the stock market - a synthetic casino of black box money printing, insider wealth aggregation and manipulation, and predatory value harvesting cartel liquidating 250 years of goodwill, is at all time highs and so I should be happy about this great maga progress I see no difference between this actor and Barry the teleprompter or uncle joe the talking potato.
My business was destroyed by fascist Covid psyop. My wealth inflated away, my future forever impaired by the theft of value I created, my hometown ruined by invasion, my social and familial network diluted and fractured by rampant materialism and the sort of economic utilitarianism that passes for Who We Are.
I am an accelerationist now. For the sake of my grandkids I want maximal pain now such that the truth can emerge. Anything short of that is being complicit in this grand charade.
Trump betrays the MAGA base by going to war and losing in order to betray the neo-con Establishment so he can bring the troops home and keep his promises to MAGA?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure this is what you are implying, but I don't think that Trump has the smarts to play both sides of that game. I find it more convincing to believe that he lied to the people to win their votes, knowing full well that he was going to betray them for the sake of his bank account.
If he was thinking ahead at all, it would have been in 2019 when he tore up the JCPOA treaty which restricted Iran's nuclear ambitions, then had a clear path to use the issue as the main reason to attack them. If Joe Biden hadn't kicked him out in 2020, this war would have been initiated four years earlier.
The silver lining in the cloud is that the troops are coming home, the overseas bases are being abandoned, and the international "partnerships" are being dismantled.
God works in mysterious ways...
It is what I am implying, in a way. As I said, who knows if this was by design, but it is happening (absent a scorched-earth nuclear policy).
DeleteI'd say 10% by design, 90% he lied.
But if by design that there are powerful interests in the US that want the US out of the empire business, then maybe higher than 10%. They knew that getting Trump elected was the fastest track to get there. So, maybe not even Trump's design but the design of people who used him knowing his personality.
Yet, most likely: Trump lied. There are reports that his family's net worth has tripled since he came into office 18 months ago. That buys a lot of lying.
I am far more inclined to believe the "powerful interests" angle and that they used Trump to do their "dirty work", than that he knowingly pushed toward that end.
DeleteIf Trump deliberately went to war so as to engineer a crushing defeat of the US to break the backs of the neo-cons and warmongers, then he must have understood that he was taking a risk of losing everything and that he decided to chance it anyway...for the sake of the people, no less. This would make him a hero, a messiah, if he won out, but it also meant extreme negative consequences if he lost. As far as I know, Trump has never risked himself on anything to save someone else and I doubt that he would do it here. As much as he likes to be seen as The Man, he is not willing to do what is necessary to be a servant ruler.
I believe he saw a chance to achieve a life's dream (obliterating Iran) and amassing a huge fortune in the process. The ends justify the means, it is said, and he lied his way into the greatest debacle of his life.
