Revelation 13:

5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.

6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.

7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.

8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

This passage is at the root of the belief held by some Christians of a one-world government – a government that will be of dread to those same Christians – “power to wage war against God’s holy people.”

The Six Pillars of Peace

Sounds like something from Revelation or Daniel, doesn’t it? 

From The Good War That Wasn’t – and Why it Matters, by Ted Grimsrud:

The Atlantic Charter also provided the basis for a statement formulated by the American Federal Council of Churches in the midst of the War, “The Six Pillars of Peace”; released in 1943, and widely circulated, the “Six Pillars” supplied bases for a moral appeal to support and participate in the War.

In all of my reading about the war, I do not recall coming across this “Six Pillars” document.  In my Timeline to War, it is not yet referenced (it will be with the next update).  So what is this Six Pillars of Peace?

CEMENT UNITY NOW WITH ORGANIZED WORLD COLLABORATION

By JOHN FOSTER DULLES, Chairman of the Commission to Study the Bases of a Just and Durable Peace

Delivered at a Luncheon Meeting of Financial, Labor, Religious and Educational Leaders, New York City, March 18, 1943

Having read very little about either Dulles brother and knowing them only by reputation (little good, mostly bad), my first reaction was WOW!  As was my second.

So, who was John Foster Dulles?  He was the son of a Presbyterian minister and grandson of a Presbyterian missionary to India.  He attended Princeton and then George Washington University Law School.  He would eventually become Secretary of State under Eisenhower. 

Both his maternal grandfather, John W. Foster, and his uncle, Robert Lansing, had held the position of Secretary of State.  Foster served during Benjamin Harrison’s administration and “helped direct the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.”  Lansing served during Wilson’s administration throughout the war and through the Paris Peace Conference.

His brother Allen served as Director of Central Intelligence under Eisenhower; his younger sister worked for the State Department for 20 years, noted for her work in the successful reconstruction of the economy of post-war Europe.

John would support America’s joining the League of Nations, joining as an early member of the League of Free Nations Association along with Eleanor Roosevelt (well before she became first-lady); he attended the San Francisco conference of 1945, formally outlining the new United Nations charter.  In the 1940s, he supported the establishment of a Jewish commonwealth in Palestine.

He was a strong advocate of containment toward communism.  Once condemning the use of the atomic bombs against Japan, he would come to threaten massive retaliation in order to contain the Soviets.  During his term as Secretary of State, he focused on the buildup of NATO.  He supported the overthrow of the Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh by his brother’s CIA.

He organized Central American coups on behalf of United Fruit Company – where he previously served as outside counsel and his brother served on the board of directors. 

He is described as “a deeply religious man.”

Now that we have some background on Dulles, some excerpts from the speech (emphasis added in all speech excerpts):

In 1940, the Federal Council of Churches voted to set up a Commission to study the bases of a just and durable peace. For over two years we have been at work. Until now we have primarily emphasized spiritual factors. We have urged upon the churches that they inculcate in men the qualities that Christ taught. We have pointed out that Christ's way was not to tell men what to do in relation to worldly matters, but to give them qualities of vision, of mind and of soul so that they would be enlightened and filled with a righteous faith. We have not sought, indeed we have opposed, the preaching from the pulpits of politics and economics. We have said to the churches, give us men and women possessed of Christian qualities, and then our citizenry can be counted on to take enlightened action.

This paragraph is enough to make me puke.  Just a couple of reactions:

“…Christ's way was not to tell men what to do in relation to worldly matters…”

What if those worldly matters are deemed contrary to Christ’s teachings?

“We have not sought, indeed we have opposed, the preaching from the pulpits of politics and economics.”

Of course not.  Because then morality and ethics might become part of the conversation.

“We have said to the churches, give us men and women possessed of Christian qualities, and then our citizenry can be counted on to take enlightened action.”

You must brainwash the congregants.

That’s enough of that portion.  Continuing with the speech:

…considerations of morality and enlightened self-interest combine to require this nation now to commit itself to a future of organized international collaboration.

Dulles, likely recalling his failed efforts toward moving the United States into the League of Nations, offers:

Will the American people now commit themselves to a future of organized international collaboration within the areas of demonstrated world interdependence? It is that decision which our proposals are designed to force, and it must be made now or the opportunity for such collaboration will inevitably disappear and the world will be doomed to continuance of the war system.

If the United Nations of this war are to continue to be united, the time to cement that unity is now and the only cement that may work is organized world collaboration.

As to the six pillars:

1^st — There must be organized political collaboration, in the first instance as between the United Nations, with others to be subsequently included. We point out that within an over-all framework there can also be regional collaboration. This might, for example, apply to Europe and the Americas.

Thereafter came the UN, the EU, and NAFTA.

2^nd — Wherever, in the economic and financial field, interdependence is such that the acts of one nation may have acute international consequences, then—we say—such acts must be brought within the scope of international agreement and not left to purely unilateral decision. We make clear that we do not advocate "free trade" as now practicable.

Thereafter came massive and incomprehensible international trade agreements.

3^rd — There must be a standing international body to study the need for change….We do not, however, propose that any international body now be given power to dictate or impose change.

Maybe not “now” as in 1943….

4^th — There should be some form of international organization to promote the ultimate autonomy of subject peoples. But we expressly recognize that in many cases such self-rule is now neither practicable nor desired by the people themselves.

People should have autonomy only when this international organization allows them to have autonomy.

5^th — We propose international control of armament, both to ensure effective disarmament and limitation of armament and also to facilitate mobilizing such armament as remains in support of international order.

People should have arms only when this international organization allows them to have arms.

6^th — and finally, we assert that the right of spiritual and intellectual liberty must be both recognized and made a matter of international concern.

I guess he had to get something about religion in there somewhere.

Conclusion

Our "six pillars of peace" deal, I think, with the areas within which world organization is indispensable.

In the speech, the word “international” appears 16 times; “organization” 6 times; “world” 10 times; “collaboration” 13 times.

Returning to Revelation 13:

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.

12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.

13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.

14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed.
