Truman bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to force the surrender of the Japanese government. By definition, Truman was a terrorist. One needs to also note that the lone condition of surrender stipulated by the Japanese was to allow them to retain their emperor as a figurehead. Truman rejected this condition. In the end, the constitution drafted by MacArthur and approved by the Japanese Diet allows the emperor to sit as figurehead.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08981075542313728717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-86795608464755302772014-08-17T06:05:42.498-07:002014-08-17T06:05:42.498-07:00I know I'm a bit late to this, but I'd lik...I know I'm a bit late to this, but I'd like to point out that Gil has apparently never heard of the notions of conditional surrender and armistice. By the way, according to international law, a white flag is considered "a protective sign of truce or ceasefire, and request for negotiation" (source).Autolykosnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-35282418573768064382014-08-10T19:56:28.322-07:002014-08-10T19:56:28.322-07:00Who cares if the Japs were peace loving or not? It doesn't matter if you'll give him some of the slack he wants but you get to decide not him.

I presume the American lives you refer to are those who were prisoners being held at the blast sites. The V rockets weren't a game changer and Japan's jetstream bombs sure as hell wasn't.

Last time I looked surrendering meant flying a white flag and by its definition is unconditional. It doesn't matter if the condition the U.S. decided were what the Japanese wanted anyway - they have to wave the white flag first. More likely some Japanese commanders wanted to surrender while others weren't ready.

Playing the "atomic bombs are worse than all other weaponry" is nonsense. The death toll from the atomic bombs (~400,000) is a drop in the bucket to the tens of millions of deaths from conventional weaponry - primarily firearms - the sacred weapons of Libertarians.
