I read the Screwtape Letters more than 10 yea...Ok. I read the Screwtape Letters more than 10 years ago. Maybe 20 years ago. But I think I need to go back and reread it. It sounds more directly relevant.RMBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13603112499567064214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-82513574029449712702019-08-20T08:47:07.291-07:002019-08-20T08:47:07.291-07:00"The foremost, or indeed the sole condition, ..."The foremost, or indeed the sole condition, which is required in order to succeed in centralizing the supreme power in a democratic community, is to love equality, or to get men to believe you love it. Thus, the science of despotism, which was once so complex, is simplified, and reduced, as it were, to a single principle." - Alexis de Tocqueville

Yeah, Tocqueville was aware of the consequences of the politicization of equality - in the 1830s! No disrespect to C.S. Lewis though, or Tolkien for that matter, for the latter also recognized this poison for what it was.

"I am not a 'democrat' only because 'humility' and equality are spiritual principles corrupted by the attempt to mechanize and formalize them, with the result that we get not universal smallness and humility, but universal greatness and pride, till some Orc gets hold of a ring of power--and then we get and are getting slavery." - J.R.R. That power is absolute, minute, regular, provident, and mild. It would be like the authority of a parent if, like that authority, its object was to prepare men for manhood; but it seeks, on the contrary, to keep them in perpetual childhood: it is well content that the people should rejoice, provided they think of nothing but rejoicing. For their happiness such a government willingly labors, but it chooses to be the sole agent and the only arbiter of that happiness; it provides for their security, foresees and supplies their necessities, facilitates their pleasures, manages their principal concerns, directs their industry, regulates the descent of property, and subdivides their inheritances: what remains, but to spare them all the care of thinking and all the trouble of living?" - Alexis de Tocqueville

I think Tocqueville's quote above could be equally sufficient in describing the Satan or the modern democratic State, and he doesn't mention it in this quote, but 'equality' is the engine driving this result in the political sphere of life.

"This places in the center of man’s life a “good, solid, resounding lie.” It isn’t just that it isn’t true; it is that he does not believe it himself." - BM

This is so true. It goes far in explaining the suicidal, self-hating, or as Mises would say, "destructionist" mentality of the masses of people afflicted by this curse, in other words, those who openly support socialism.

Another great quote from Tocqueville relevant to what I assume has become the mission statement of this blog:

"In France I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America I found they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the same country ..." - Alexis de Tocqueville

This could explain the different outcomes of the American and French revolutions, and the longer lasting freedom enjoyed in America.

Also, more generally:

"Religion is no less the companion of liberty in all its battles and triumphs; the cradle of its infancy, and the divine source of its claims. The safeguard of morality is religion, and morality is the best security of law and the surest pledge of freedom." - Alexis de Tocqueville

And by religion he meant Christianity. At least he certainly wasn't referring to Islam.

"I studied the Koran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of Mohammed." - Alexis de TocquevilleA Texas Libertarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02980539931923054404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-65682345798687722142019-08-20T08:02:04.281-07:002019-08-20T08:02:04.281-07:00The Bionic Mosquito is correct.
By itself the NAP...The Bionic Mosquito is correct.

By itself the NAP is not enough for human beings to survive and thrive.

Observe that even the most barbaric of coercive states rarely justifies its existence or actions by proclaiming the “Aggression Principle” (AP) aka “Might makes right.”

Even tyrants realize human beings need to be provided with something much more than that, if the tyrant hopes to rule for an extended period.

By integrating the NAP into the 6 branches of philosophy correctly you’ll construct the foundation you’re looking for regarding the proper way to live as a human being.

This integration, if done correctly... will result in all 6 branches of philosophy being congruent with each other and in total harmony.

This is Natural Law.

Human existence and the quality of our lives is dependent upon our adherence to Natural Law in all spheres of our lives.

Contradictions eventually lead to displacement, which is why all political governments based on the AP eventually fail.

Before liberty can be resurrected tyranny must first die.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
