Lewis just title his book &qu... Why doesn't C.S. Lewis just title his book "The Abolition of the Meaning of Man"?

God does not speak being into existence. How does God exist when there is no a priori existence? The word is the means by which we come into existence while God is the origin or foundation of our existence. At least that's how Paul sees it (1 Corinthians 8:6), and it makes perfect sense. For anything to exist, existence must exist.

There is no logical way to claim that existence (or non-existence) has a beginning or end without violating the law of non-contradiction. I dare anyone to prove me wrong.

Words cannot BE meaningful. By definition, words have meaning, but are not the meanings or definitions themselves. Moreover, they cannot be the definition or meaning due to the fact that meanings expand and change over time. The examples have already been provided. They cannot be the meaning any more than they can be their antonyms which as we've all seen eventually becomes the case with those who think so.

If God speaks creation into existence, then reason isn't the controlling principle of the universe, but the word itself. God speaks, but it isn't the meaning of light which appears, but light itself. The word is associated or identified with the light. Ultimately, the word is the light, and the means by which what is done in the dark is revealed. Light doesn't need meaning or a reason to exist. Light requires God to exist.

The word does not manifest meaning. The word manifests everything that can exist, even God, or at least God's image. The Destroyer does not come to destroy meaning, but to destroy what actually exists. In a world where people are no longer concerned with existence, but with the meaning of existence, they're already dead. They're living in a simulation or a world of ideas rather than living in the word.

The word is essentially synonymous with existence, but the word doesn't create meaning. The word is the means by which everything is created.

Words cannot have objective meaning. The Word is the means by which everything comes into objective existence, but existence or being is not objective. Moreover, "exist" is an intransitive verb and governs no object. The logos can never be lost as it is the medium or means of existence itself. Humanity has not lost sight of meaning but gotten lost in meaning.

The focus on God is what has been lost, and that was from the very beginning when Adam sought knowledge of God rather than the immediate connection he already had in the very image of God. shnarklehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12085426871631417354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-84841505198897092612022-04-28T13:18:30.140-07:002022-04-28T13:18:30.140-07:00"It is the churches that bear the biggest gui..."It is the churches that bear the biggest guilt in bringing on the meaning crisis." And, of course, the universities. And quintessentially, the church affiliated universities. Like mine. The theology chair, a man, a Catholic, "married" another man, an Episcopal priest, in an Episcopal same sex marriage rite. Our university president, a Jesuit, officially reminded the university, community that this action, was, of course, against church teaching. He then proceeded to wish the happy couple all their best as they embarked upon their future married life. The same president gave an award at the annual commencement to Rev. James Martin, S.J. Among other contributions to the faith, apart from his LGBTQ advocacy, Fr. Martin stipulated, on line, that the death of the Lord Jesus and of George Floyd were almost identical: both died of suffocation, both died to save their people. It is hard to make this stuff up.
Christos anesti!Deacon Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07708653111827647244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-87124006940806672852022-04-28T06:46:18.127-07:002022-04-28T06:46:18.127-07:00Remembrance( of the Word) is the rediscovery and a...Remembrance( of the Word) is the rediscovery and affirmation of our primordial ground of being, our rootedness in God. It can also be translated "but", "then", "now", "next", etc. That strengthens your point. It is always vav conjuction + God said.

Second, I would say "Logos" most commonly in the Bible means "word" or the content of words namely information, data. You correctly mention that in Greek philosophy "Logos" also meant foundational principle or reason or logic. Obviously "logic" comes from "logos".

I do see a big difference between "sublime" and "pretty". Just think of what things we use those words to describe. A flower is pretty. A dress is pretty. To define sublime, read Job 38. Something that is sublime is awe inspiring, transcendental, or, over powering. I see Lewis's point.

I find Nietzsche funny in those passages. He thinks he is saying something so profound. So new. So powerful. But he isn't. He is only admitting what God said about Him. He is only admitting the foundational message of the Bible.

Because we all did kill God in a sense. Jesus went on the cross because of our sin. Our sin killed Jesus. The Logos. But that was God's plan all along since the Fall in Genesis 3. "He shall crush your head and you shall bruise His heal". Nietzshe couldn't help but admit mankind's guilt before the Father. But what is the solution? There is no Ubermensch.

There is Resurrection! The Logos was raised on the 3rd day to a new life and all of creation was given over to Him as King. The outcome of man killing God is man pledging allegiance to God as King. He can't be defeated. It's impossible. The church will continue to preach despite our faults and sin. The church will rule with King Jesus when He returns to the Earth.

What a sublime realization.

https://thecrosssectionrmb.blogspot.comRMBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13603112499567064214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-648884752216444797.post-50142813523314460152022-04-27T09:10:50.044-07:002022-04-27T09:10:50.044-07:00Indeed! Your last paragraph defines it precisely - so what is the eroding mechanism by which the church has lost its salt and light?
In one word....pietism!
"What is pietism? Pietism preaches a limited salvation: “individual soul-only, family-only, church-only.” It rejects the very idea of the comprehensive redeeming power of the gospel, the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, and the comprehensive responsibility of Christians in history."
Copied from just one post in my archive/library on a word search PIETISM - multiple articles by various authors which nail this insidious affliction which literally prevents us from being servants and warriors for Christ and distracts us into a mission impossible effort to bring about our own perfection.
Anyone interested can do your own research - DaLimbraw Library is open!Crush Limbrawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11511707894293049606noreply@blogger.com
